"The Kanji Vase"

8 x 10"
oil on canvas

I love this blue cloth against the oranges. Talk about your complements! Also, a word about the vase: I trash-picked it from the dumpster behind a local ceramics studio. A potter was throwing it out! What I was doing rummaging in their dumpster...um, nevermind.

And speaking of fun things to do in Eugene: if you're planning to come out for the Marathon on Sunday, keep your eyes peeled for Carol and I. We'll be running the Half!

"Still Life with Apple and Cheese" daily painting fruit art kitchen decor oil on canvas

5 x 7"
oil on canvas

Dear Cheese,
I really can't explain why this is the first time in four years of daily painting that I've chosen you as a subject. I believe that, perhaps, at a very deep level, I want to keep you all to myself.

Sarah

My workshop started off well today. We did some ten-minute paintings. Mine are below. Disclaimer: I began all of these in ten minutes, but went back and tweaked them a bit, so, really they are more like 15 minute paintings.

Here is the commission I've been working on, completed! I must say I'm proud of this piece, and thoroughly enjoyed working on it, though finding a composition I liked was a little challenging at first. Challenging is good, right? A new session of my still life workshop starts tomorrow at Maude Kerns, so now I'm off to make my final preparations for that.

6 x 6"

This little piece is an experiment or sketch for a larger commission I'm working on today. Some artists do preliminary drawings of their compositions, but I feel my way around much more comfortably in color. I always love the looseness I get in these warmup works!

Worked on this over the weekend. I was experimenting with building up the background wall in thin layers, for a luminous effect. Also, over the weekend, I attended the inaugural meeting of my new book club and sloshed through one of the last training runs leading up to my first half-marathon, which is two weeks away!

More poached Camellias. I snatched these surreptitiously as I was pushing Ellie past in her stroller the other day. I'm glad she'll still tolerate the stroller, but pushing all 35 pounds of her makes my jogs a LOT harder!

Caffeine! Oh, sorry, I got a little distracted there. I just bought a seriously great Groupon from Jerry's Artarama. Check it out! More than half off art supplies, and hey, we all need them. I, myself, have a list as long as my forearm...

Are any of you using Pinterest yet? I must admit, I'm totally addicted! My mom was telling me about a folder she had as a girl filled with pictures of things she liked or wanted, and Pinterest is a lot like that. Let me know if you've been using it - I'd love to see your pins!

"Apple Bowl with Apple Blossoms" art daily painting still life fruit flowers green pink

6 x 6"
oil on canvas
Sold

Well, I didn't paint over the weekend because, frankly, I ran out of canvases! We spent the weekend eating dinners out, and easter egg hunting with friends and their toddlers. Yesterday I restocked my arsenal, and I'll also be heading back to figure painting tonight. You can see a work-in-progress picture of this little painting on Facebook.

"Green Teapot and Apple Branches" still life daily painting mothers day gift

5 x 7"
oil on canvas
collection of the artist

Happy Easter and Passover weekend, everyone (also my wedding anniversary)! Here is a composition featuring my favorite color combo: purple and green. The background paper I used in the setup is actually more of a gray, but under the halogen light, it made a nice lavender.

"Camellia and Strawberries" floral flower still life fruit bowl red pink blue oil painting daily

8 x 10"
oil on canvas

I painted this in little snatches of time over the course of three days. Not my favorite way to work, but there have been a lot of other things to squeeze in. All good things, though, so I don't mind - especially since I'm happy with the way this painting eventually came out!

"Camellia and Apple Blossoms" daily painting still life floral flowers spring garden original oil

9 x 12"
oil on canvas

This painting has a wintry feel to me, even though it's a very springy subject. Something about the  light background, the almost bare branch, and the starkly cast shadow all say "winter," although on the other hand, the warm light and bright pink blooms are all about spring.

Camellias have the greatest leaves, don't they? I always feel like my green-mixing muscles get a good workout when I paint them.

Every spring I drive around with an eye peeled for blooming Camellias. I actually keep a pair of scissors in my glove compartment, just in case I spy one an opportunity to snip a few blossoms. Yes, it's true, spring brings out my inner thief!
