Christmas Passed

 "Merry and Bright"
8 x 8 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

I'm just a little bit late for Christmas with this one, but hey - your tree is still up, right? I figured I had until New Years before this would be really inappropriate.  And I didn't want to miss my annual opportunity to pull out the fun paint tubes - Pthalo Turquoise, Quinacridone Rose....

I say it a LOT: you can create the illusion of almost any color using a limited palette. Case in point: the golden egg yolks seen here, painted using only Yellow Ocher - a very dull, earthy yellow. But to really nail the intense colors of these ornaments, special pigments are required.

Here's a work-in-progress, at the halfway point:

And! Also too late for Christmas (I could give you my list of excuses, but Nah...) I made my Calendar for 2016! One of the best things about making these is that throughout the year, I'll randomly get a message like, "Hi! July's painting is just lovely!" And I'll have five long seconds of having NO idea what you're talking about.

Mark Your Calendars!

 "Quiet Plums"
8 x 8 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

This is the first time I've used natural light on a still life in my new studio. The late afternoon light is a tranquil blue coming through my windows - especially on drizzly, overcast days like a few we've had recently. And yes, this gray swirly cloth is a repurposed curtain.
 ☺
I'm all smiles (and stomach butterflies) about an exciting event coming up soon - my first solo show in nearly three years! The Gallery at the Watershed isn't a humongous space, but my paintings are small. My point is, there's going to be a TON of work on display. Which is good, because I paint a lot.

Mark your calendars! And if you can, please do come to the opening. The show will be a mix of still life, figure, and portrait, and you might even spot one or two of my models in the crowd. The Gallery is hosting several fun events around this show, so stay tuned!

"Daydreamer" original fine art portrait painting woman girl

11 x 14"
oil on canvas
Sold

With one thing and another, it's been almost a month since I posted a figure painting! Glad to be able to present you with this one today. I also have work-in-progress shots, which those who follow me on Facebook saw last night, in real time, posted from the Art Center's painting studio. They had no idea what they were doing when they gave me their wifi password. None at all.

I've been sitting in front of my computer a lot this week, and one result is this: my 2013 calendar is complete!
Every year I choose some of my favorites from the past 10 or 12 months, and I'm liking my crop of 2012 recruits! If you'd like to get one or several (they make great gifts - tell 'em, Mom and Dad), email me, or go here. Thanks!
