Emerald Orb - and Workshop Announcements!

"Emerald Orb"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas
$350

My strange little offering from Still Life Open Studio last week. It's always such an adventure - I never know what I will come home with, even though I bring all the objects and set up the still life!

This painting may be strange, but I love it. It just lingers in my eye.

I want to give you all a last-minute heads up about two still life workshops I'll be teaching soon - one in Park City, Utah later this month, and the other in Oklahoma City in October.  Spaces are still available in both, and I'd love to have you join me!

West Light Daisies

"West Light Daisies"
12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

Here is a simple still life, much more about the effect of light on the objects than the objects themselves. I loved exploring the translucencies of the turquoise cup and the flower petals, and the gorgeous shadow and light patterns on the tabletop. In other words, I wanted to paint that window light. The things I set up in the light were almost incidental.

For those in the Seattle area: I'm going to be at Brackenwood Gallery on Whidbey Island, Saturday, August 15th, for an "Artist's Salon," aka, a painting demonstration and reception. Join me if you can, or follow my adventures on Facebook and Instagram!

Underwater...

"Submerged"
8 x 8 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

This painting was 100% inspired by my almost-five-year-old daughter's flower picking technique. She plucks them right up close to the blossom, bears them home in her beautiful little hands, and proceeds to display them thusly, in small glasses of water, with buds under and over water, without knowing the "rules" of flower arranging. I think it's beautiful - and a great metaphor as well, if you go in for that whole art-as-emotional-mirror thing. Which I occaisionally do.

Cryptic and mysterious, while embracing the beauty of childhood. An Absolutlely perfect mix.

"Suzanne's Daisies" A top-secret Christmas commission!

16 x 20"
oil on canvas
Sold

Merry Christmas! I am blogging to you from the warmth and sunshine of my in-laws' place in Florida. Our orgy of giving is complete, and since a certain lucky friend of mine also received her gifts today, I can now share this painting with you. Back in July, when these daisies were blooming in their garden, her husband commissioned this piece - and then, somehow, he had the willpower to wait five months before giving it to her! Now, they will have daisies all year long, and you can, too, since my preparatory sketch is up for auction:

"(sketch for) Suzanne's Daisies"
5 x 7"

I'm already excited for all that's to come in 2013 - but hey, it's still Christmas Day, so, from my family to yours - Happy Holidays!
