Hoya Kentiana

"Hoya Kentiana"
8 x 16 inches, oil on canvas
$400

The pattern of the leaves, the pattern of the shadows, the pattern on the bowl...this was a very meditative painting to create!

Where Have You Been?

I had a fantastic Fall.

I got to spend a month painting at an artist's residency in Northern California.
Artists' Residencies are truly special opportunities to immerse yourself not only in your work, but in a community of really diverse creators. I lived with dancers, writers, sculptors, and even an opera composer!
The program is called Djerassi, and it was a really great experience.

 "Nine Readings"
A series of 10 x 10 inch pieces exploring the symbology of the Tarot.

All painted with a limited palette of Burnt Umber, Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre, and Titanium White.

My official residency photo - like class pictures in school! :)

Painting a portrait of one of my fellow residents.

I have a lot of exciting things coming up, and invite you to read all about them in my newsletter, and while you're at it, please subscribe!

Thank you, as always, for reading.

Death and The Sun

"Death and The Sun"
13 x 21 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

This is the Rider-Waite tarot deck - probably the most well-known tarot deck, designed in 1909, and painted by a female illustrator, Pamela Colman Smith! I've given you two, in the title - what other cards do you recognize?

Plums and Fabric, once again, along with the milk of the muse.

Here is a color study I made before taking a deep breath and diving into this big beautiful canvas!

Italian Plums

"Italian Plums"

I was given a LOT of these plums by a generous friend with a generous tree. I made five paintings of them last week! So, abundance all around.

Plums on Pink and Blue

"Plums on Pink and Blue"
16 x 16 inches, oil on canvas
$700

I'm exploring "Fabric" with my online mentorship students this month. They've already done some incredible things, and I'm discovering a newfound love for the stuff. Go figure!

August Hydrangeas

"August Hydrangeas"
16 x 16 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

The colors in these "white" hydrangeas are so subtle and varied - I saw a lot of greens reflecting from the ground and the leaves. And where there's green, there's usually purple! Lucky me, my favorite color combo.

I've got a few more workshops in 2019 - the next one is portrait painting in Eugene, Oregon. It's going to be a small, intimate group (8 max) at one of my favorite local studios, Whiteaker Printmakers. We'll be using the Zorn palette. What is it and how does it work? Come find out! Three spots still open. Click here to view and share.

Thanks!

Chocolate Eggs

"Chocolate Eggs"
12 x 19 inches, oil on canvas
$600

Low key, or overall dark compositions are rather rare for me. I wanted to explore the brown-on-brown, and I do like the velvety darkness of that background.

Three Brown Eggs - and Pixels!

 "Three Brown Eggs"
8 x 8 inches, oil on canvas

and below:
"Three Brown Eggs/Pixel"
8 x 8 inches, oil on panel

Which came first, the pixels or the eggs?

I've been having a great time over on Instagram, fielding guesses as to what the subject of these pixel paintings might be. In fact, the idea for the fortune cookie painting in my last post came from one of the guesses on this one. It does look kind of like a fortune cookie!

Chopped Choy

art still life oil painting bok choy vegetable by sarah sedwick
"Chopped Choy"

Another look at this Bok Choy - after the knife treatment! Loved observing the enfolded shapes of the white stems contrasted with that fluttering "skirt!"

Bound/Unbound

"Bound" and "Unbound"
Two canvases, each 10x20 inches, oil
$600 each

A two-for-one blog post today! I didn't really begin painting "Bound" intending to do a follow-up, but the more I got into those gorgeous leaves, the more I wanted to try them from the other direction - and slice one in half. Those leaves were pure joy to paint, from both angles!

Orange Slices and Silver

"Orange Slices and Silver"
8 x 13 inches, oil on canvas on panel

I'm loving this little cream pitcher lately. The reflections in metal are so satisfying to paint. I think I'm going to have to go on a mission to find more silver inspiration!

Golden Spiral

 "Golden Spiral"
10 x 16 inches, oil on canvas
$500

Why did I call this one "Golden Spiral?" Because it fits so nicely inside the Fibonacci spiral! You can see another painting on a Golden Mean ratio canvas in my previous post.

Slices and Halves

"Slices and Halves"
8 x 13 inches, oil on panel
$350

Kind of a strange canvas size, this 8x13" deal that Masterpiece makes - and strangely wonderful to work on. The reason why isn't a mystery!

13/8 = 1.62, aka the Golden Mean, or Golden Ratio.

Red Heels no. 2

"Red Heels no. 2"
9 x 12 inches, oil on panel
Sold

I had a great time teaching portrait with the Zorn palette in Southern California last weekend, and now am planning to enjoy painting a bit of still life in preparation for my next workshop, at the beautiful Gateway Academy in St. Louis, June 21-23. There's still time to register, if you'd like to join me!

Silver Star

"Silver Star"
10 x 10 inches, oil on panel
$350

Although this is pretty much a neutral, gray painting (my palette looked like a swatch set for picking out concrete floor finishes), my eye can still find a range of colors within. Blue, yellow, purple... can you see them?

Green Salsa - A One-Dollar Auction!

 "Green Salsa"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

I taught some GREAT workshops in May,  capped off with Memorial Day weekend at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, on the Oregon Coast, with a wonderful group of artists.

Here was their value demo, in black and white, which later became this painting!

Oil Painting Boot Camp is turning out to be a really fun workshop - we use only three colors and white (artist's choice!), and do some of my favorite quick exercises - Twisted 20's, Stroke Economy - and of course, work from fun, colorful still lifes!

Beautiful studio, isn't it?

My next Oil Painting Boot Camp will be July 26-28th, at The Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art in Edmond, OK. Join me!

Red Heels

"Red Heels"
10 x 10 inches, oil on panel

When you're a still life painter, people regularly offer to lend you their stuff. Some of my favorite painting experiences have been with borrowed items, and these slick red heels are no exception. Thanks to my artist friend Zoe for volunteering her daughter's shoes!
