Three Brown Eggs - and Pixels!

 "Three Brown Eggs"
8 x 8 inches, oil on canvas

and below:
"Three Brown Eggs/Pixel"
8 x 8 inches, oil on panel

Which came first, the pixels or the eggs?

I've been having a great time over on Instagram, fielding guesses as to what the subject of these pixel paintings might be. In fact, the idea for the fortune cookie painting in my last post came from one of the guesses on this one. It does look kind of like a fortune cookie!

The fortune said "Pleasure awaits your company." :)

I've been painting a lot and having a great time. Hope your August is off to a wonderful start as well!

Thanks for reading.

Pointed Toes

"Pointed Toes"
8 x 13 inches, oil on Masterpiece Hardcore Pro Panel

I adore the texture of these shoes - and they're purple! My favorite color.

I've been hosting a painting-a-day week on Instagram, and there's been some great work posted, both by my online students, and by other friends. Visit the hashtag #sarahsedwickseveninseven to enjoy the visual feast!

Pitcher of Almond Milk

"Pitcher of Almond Milk"
12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas

I'm tempted to keep this one for myself, it's so soothing to my eye. Some color combinations just speak to us, don't they?

Chopped Choy

art still life oil painting bok choy vegetable by sarah sedwick
"Chopped Choy"
12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas

Another look at this Bok Choy - after the knife treatment! Loved observing the enfolded shapes of the white stems contrasted with that fluttering "skirt!"

Did you get my last newsletter? It's the best way (besides Instagram) to keep up with my biggest announcements. In this edition, I hint around about a sweet giveaway I'm hosting on Instagram this week. Sign up here if you'd like to get the next one!

18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas

A new one, which is actually an older one, reworked. I'm glad I took the risk to experiment with altering it. Here's the before and after:

"Bound" and "Unbound"
Two canvases, each 10x20 inches, oil
$600 each

A two-for-one blog post today! I didn't really begin painting "Bound" intending to do a follow-up, but the more I got into those gorgeous leaves, the more I wanted to try them from the other direction - and slice one in half. Those leaves were pure joy to paint, from both angles!

Orange Slices and Silver

"Orange Slices and Silver"
8 x 13 inches, oil on canvas on panel

I'm loving this little cream pitcher lately. The reflections in metal are so satisfying to paint. I think I'm going to have to go on a mission to find more silver inspiration!

Orange and Cream

"Orange and Cream"
10 x 10 inches, oil on panel

I've been hosting a week of daily painting on Instagram, and this was my effort for Day 4! Check out the hashtag #sarahsedwickseveninseven to see what others have been up to. Great stuff!

Halved Plum

 "Halved Plum"
9 x 12 inches, oil on canvas on panel

I painted this one with a slightly wacky limited palette: cadmium orange, alizarin crimson, and phthalo green!

If you're wondering how on earth that works, perhaps you'd like to join me for an "Oil Painting Boot Camp" workshop and find out! My next one is in beautiful Tubac, Arizona, December 6-8th, and registration just opened! More info here.

Golden Spiral

 "Golden Spiral"
10 x 16 inches, oil on canvas

Why did I call this one "Golden Spiral?" Because it fits so nicely inside the Fibonacci spiral! You can see another painting on a Golden Mean ratio canvas in my previous post.

Slices and Halves

"Slices and Halves"
8 x 13 inches, oil on panel

Kind of a strange canvas size, this 8x13" deal that Masterpiece makes - and strangely wonderful to work on. The reason why isn't a mystery!

13/8 = 1.62, aka the Golden Mean, or Golden Ratio.

Red Heels no. 2

"Red Heels no. 2"
9 x 12 inches, oil on panel

I had a great time teaching portrait with the Zorn palette in Southern California last weekend, and now am planning to enjoy painting a bit of still life in preparation for my next workshop, at the beautiful Gateway Academy in St. Louis, June 21-23. There's still time to register, if you'd like to join me!

Silver Star

"Silver Star"
10 x 10 inches, oil on panel

Although this is pretty much a neutral, gray painting (my palette looked like a swatch set for picking out concrete floor finishes), my eye can still find a range of colors within. Blue, yellow, purple... can you see them?

Green Salsa - A One-Dollar Auction!

 "Green Salsa"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas

I taught some GREAT workshops in May,  capped off with Memorial Day weekend at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, on the Oregon Coast, with a wonderful group of artists.

Here was their value demo, in black and white, which later became this painting!

Oil Painting Boot Camp is turning out to be a really fun workshop - we use only three colors and white (artist's choice!), and do some of my favorite quick exercises - Twisted 20's, Stroke Economy - and of course, work from fun, colorful still lifes!

Beautiful studio, isn't it?

My next Oil Painting Boot Camp will be July 26-28th, at The Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art in Edmond, OK. Join me!

Red Heels

"Red Heels"
10 x 10 inches, oil on panel

When you're a still life painter, people regularly offer to lend you their stuff. Some of my favorite painting experiences have been with borrowed items, and these slick red heels are no exception. Thanks to my artist friend Zoe for volunteering her daughter's shoes!

Some other borrowed-item paintings:

Pears en Rose

"Pears en Rose"
12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas
Click to buy

I've been getting some painting in before I head to my next workshop, in Sacramento, CA. There are still a few spots open, at the fabulous Patris Studio and Gallery, if you know anyone in the area who'd love some Oil Painting Boot Camp!

Boot Camp is a three-day workshop with an emphasis on loosening up your brushwork - and using a limited palette of three colors and white. Looking forward to it! More info here.

Pink Milk

 "Pink Milk"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas

I noticed, after the first session of work on this painting, that the milk looked very pink - especially before I filled in the pinks on the plate. I toned it down a bit, but the name stuck!

Thanks for reading!

When I set them on this plate, the pink blush on the pears just came alive!

10 x 10 inches, oil on panel

It's hard to believe, but I've never painted shoes - at least ones that weren't on feet - in my life before this week! There's always something new to explore.

Pink Ring

"Pink Ring"
9 x 12 inches, oil on canvas on panel

Experimenting with color in this one - Burnt Sienna and Sap Green, plus white! Proving once again that everything in painting is relative - a tube of "brown" creates gorgeous pinks when offset by its complement, green.

16 x 16 inches, oil on canvas

Hello, it's been a while! I've been teaching a lot lately - both workshops and online - and having a blast. My studio panting time has been falling into two categories - quick studies and oil sketches, both for personal research and as teaching tools - many of which can be seen and purchased directly through Instagram -- and larger works, of which this is one.

Thanks for looking!

Winter Greens

"Winter Greens" oil painting by Sarah Sedwick 18x24
"Winter Greens"
18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas

A bit larger than I usually work! Here's a shot of the finished painting in my studio, with the still life:

I've got a workshop coming up March 2-3 in Portland, OR, and I could really use some help spreading the word! If you know an oil painter - of any skill level - in the area, please consider sharing it with them. Here's a link to all the info. Many thanks!

9 x 12 inches, oil on canvas

Underpainting to finish! I always begin my alla prima works with a tonal underpainting, which I then paint over immediately in color - not waiting for it to dry. Here's a short video of me talking more about it!

Red Heads

"Red Heads" 10x10 inches, oil on canvas by Sarah Sedwick 2019
"Red Heads"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas

I copy the details on these dolls pretty carefully - except the faces. It's fun to play with their little expressions, and shows me once again how small changes in a portrait can really affect the overall mood I capture!
