I moved my easel into the middle of the room and painted yesterday's still life from a different angle. It's a much darker day than yesterday, and that also gave the scene a new feel.

Halfway through painting this, I heard my cat freaking out in the hallway. I went to investigate and found him playing with a snake! Granted, it was no Boa Constrictor, but still - it was on the second floor of my house! Right now it's trapped underneath a garbage can waiting for Jesse to get home and deal with it. Snake disposal is NOT in my job description...

I had a great time this morning meeting a fellow Eugene painter, Gabriella Soraci, who emailed me after discovering my work on Etsy. I really like Etsy, I have to say. I don't sell much there, but it's great in so many other ways!

Lilies are the most difficult flower to paint - at least that I've encountered so far. I think it's because the value differences are so slight - it's hard to show what the petals are doing without getting way too fussy with the detail. With red roses, for example, you get some really luscious darks - these lilies just don't have that. They're pretty, though!

A big thanks to Lana, one of my excellent local collectors, for donating the vase and the flowers! It's always fun to have new objects to paint.

I toned this canvas with a wash of pthalo green before beginning...it had very strange effects. It sort of deadened every color I put down - even the greens didn't go on quite like I expected them to. I'm not unhappy with the painting, but I'm still not sure I'll try starting with pthalo green again.

I hope you are all enjoying your Memorial Day Weekend, and having great weather. We are getting ready for a much-anticipated influx of houseguests next week, and Jesse is finishing a long list of outdoor projects. I'm helping as much as I can...which isn't much when it comes to shoveling dirt!

I worked quickly on this one to try and capture the changing light pattern. I toned the canvas with a wash of Alizarin Crimson before beginning, and I like the way it peeks through in small patches, giving the whole painting a rosy glow. You can see the same effect on yesterday's painting.
