Black Hair, Green Eyes

Here are my results from Open Studio last night. I think this guy has incredibly expressive eyes...in my large finished portrait (above), he's even got something of a young Don Draper going on. Well, I see it, anyway!
Here is the preparatory sketch. I did the sketch in one hour and the final piece in two.

And, because I love all my loyal fans, (and am always hoping to reach new eyeballs) here is a $1 ebay auction! Bid on it, share it on Facebook, or just ignore it completely! Either way, know you are appreciated.

Here is a work-in-progress shot, less than half finished, I think. Well, the roses look just about done. When I am behaving responsibly, I paint the most perishable parts of a still life first. When I'm not, I just paint whatever seems like the most fun at the time - usually, the gold vase. Why else would it be in almost every single one of my paintings!?

I had a really hard time photographing this - there's some glare all over the place, but especially in the dark areas in the lower left corner. So, more wine paintings! Not only do I have a show coming up at a winery, but a couple other wine-related opportunities have also floated my way. Good thing I'm not getting tired of the subject! Work-in-progress shots are over on Facebook. Oh, and in case you're curious, here's some info on the title!

I Heart Oregon (Wine)
14 x 18"
oil on canvas
$350
Below is the preparatory sketch for this painting. As you can see, I decided to shift the whole composition to include more of the cork board, and the entire "I ♥ Oregon" bumper sticker tacked onto it. I like the sketch as well, since it shows more of that luxurious shiny cloth. "I Heart OR (Wine)/Sketch"

I just posted a work-in-progress shot, and some other pictures from around the studio on my facebook page. "Like" me to get updates on the upcoming March First Friday festivites.

My husband sent our 18 month old staggering into my studio yesterday carrying this huge bouquet of flowers - it was almost as big as she is!

I think I'm having some success breaking myself in to working larger. An 8 x 10 inch canvas is starting to feel so small...

The print in the background of this piece is "Red Maple" by A.Y. Jackson. I didn't know anything about the artist when I bought the print, but I like the image a lot. The colors go particularly well with wine bottle colors, I've noticed!

Happy impending Valentine's Day! To get a jump on your festivities, or for a romantic date-night outing, head over to Maude Kerns (between now and Monday), and get a free chocolate palette! "Settings and Stills" closes February 14th, but there will be plenty of chances to see my newest work next month.

Before beginning this painting yesterday, I warmed up with an exercise from The Daily Paintworks website - a series of ten-minute paintings of the same object. It was a great way to start the painting day - I felt very ready to jump into this canvas once I'd done it. To see my exercise, and all the other great entries, click here.

Pitcher, Candle, Roses
12 x 12"
oil on 1.5" deep canvas
$250
Well, that's the end of the pink roses, but this is only the first painting featuring my new studio table, which I picked up at a junk shop over the weekend. This place is not a thrift store, and it's not really an estate sale...I certainly wouldn't call it an antique shop. It's a storefront, and it's crammed full of stuff, and there's a guy there collecting money, but no price tags or cash registers....It's a junk shop, right?! Anyway, now that I've cleaned this table up a bit, you can look forward to seeing it in many paintings to come.

"Art is indeed not the food but the wine of life."
16 x 20"
oil on canvas
I did a 6 x 8" sketch in preparation for this larger painting, which came out great (hence the confidence to try it bigger). I've listed it on ebay, and you can bid on it here.
The title of this painting is a quotation by Jean Paul Richter.

This model has a very long and beautiful neck. I may have exaggerated it slightly in this painting, but not much.

This one is a little more impressionistic, or, I guess - exuberant - than I normally work, but I like the liveliness of the outcome.

View From the Floor - 16 x 20 oil painting on canvas
16 x 20"
oil on canvas
I posted some of my recent figure paintings in my Etsy shop. I'm way out of practice, but I've been happy with my results. It seems to be true that painting a nude isn't all that much different from painting a pile of apples. No offense intended to the beautiful models!
