Looking West towards our neighbors' house. We call it the "Buddhist Temple" house because, well, it looks like one!
In other news, I finally figured out how to create a Treasury on Etsy. I put one together featuring some great realistic paintings - check it out!

Candy-Colored Chrysanthemums - floral oil painting on canvas

 11 x 14"
oil on canvas

Well, here's how I spent my weekend! I guess that's not entirely true - I also made beef barley soup, ran five miles, watched a movie with Jesse, went to an estate sale, did some online shopping, and changed a bunch of diapers, but you know what I mean.

Anyone else read Freedom yet? It's definitely the "it" book of last year, and I can attest that it's worth all the hype. If you're wondering why I bring this up, just look more closely at today's painting...

Well, this one's kind of random! But never underestimate the appeal of a cardboard box: this painting sold on opening night at Maude Kerns!

Carnations in Purple - still life floral art oil on canvas 8x10, available on Etsy

 8 x 10"
oil on canvas
I went to a figure painting open studio the other night. I hate to admit it, but it's been ten years since I've done anything like that. It was really fun, and I promise I won't be waiting another ten years before I go back! I'd like to sell my creation to fund further sessions - at $11 for 3 hours, they're more than worth it, but not exactly small change - but I'm wondering if there's even a market for such academic kinds of things. Would Etsy be a good place? Would any of you be interested? If you'd like to see the piece, and consider making me an offer, please email me! In the meantime, here's a teaser:

Nightfall - interior still life oil painting on canvas

11 x 14"
oil on canvas

We live in the woods. Not in a remote cabin, or anything, but in a neighborhood that was clearly carved out of a pine forest 30 or so years ago, with many of the trees left standing. When I saw this beautiful blue color behind the inky evening trees, I grabbed a canvas and got it down as quickly as I could, then filled the rest in slowly.

Here are a couple of pictures from the opening reception for "Settings and Stills" at Maude Kerns Art Center last Friday:

My Big Day

My art show at Maude Kerns Art Center opens tonight, Friday January 14th, and I'm very VERY excited. I hope everyone who lives close by has plans to come, but if you can't make it tonight, the show runs through February 11th. I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity, and I'm honestly most excited to see what the wonderful staff at Maude Kerns has done with the exhibit space - they've been amazing so far, and totally deserve their great reputation in the community. Bring on the celebration!

 6 x 8"
oil on canvas
(on hold)

In the background of this painting is one of my new prints, "Flowers in a Crystal Vase," by Manet. It shows very effectively how a painting doesn't have to be complicated to be good. I was thinking along those lines as I painted this, can you tell?

One Rose Among Many - daily painting oil on canvas floral

6 x 6"
oil on canvas
Sold

It occurred to me yesterday that it's been quite a while since I painted any flowers, so here you go! My big problem with this one was getting too dark too quickly on the rose itself. It seems so rich and saturated at first, but if you waste all those dark darks at the beginning, it becomes quite hard to convey the form! Oh well, lesson learned - for now.

Oh, all the ingredients for a successful after dinner get together. I'm in love with this little painting!

Wine and Pears - and my BIG announcement (finally!)

12 x 12"
oil on canvas
Sold
I'm having a show at a great gallery here in Eugene, the Maude Kerns Art Center, and the opening is January 14th, from 6 to 8 pm.  The show is titled "Settings and Stills: Guild of Eugene Metalsmiths and Paintings by Sarah Sedwick." There will be lots of gorgeous metal jewelery and sculpture, and I will have over 25 pieces on view! This is a really huge deal for me - the selection process was juried, and there were over 90 entrants, so this represents a real vote of confidence in my work by the gallery. I could not be more honored, and I hope to see many of you there next Friday night!!!

Pomegranate on the Windowsill

6 x 8"
oil on canvas
Sold

So, happy New Year! I've got a new folder going on the desktop entitled "Paintings '11," and I'm already dreading (and pre-procrastinating) assembling my 2010 data for tax time. I did 130 daily paintings last year, and three or four commissions, and it went by really fast. All I can say is that I hope and intend to keep up that pace in the new year!
