I toned this canvas with a wash of pthalo green before beginning...it had very strange effects. It sort of deadened every color I put down - even the greens didn't go on quite like I expected them to. I'm not unhappy with the painting, but I'm still not sure I'll try starting with pthalo green again.

I worked quickly on this one to try and capture the changing light pattern. I toned the canvas with a wash of Alizarin Crimson before beginning, and I like the way it peeks through in small patches, giving the whole painting a rosy glow. You can see the same effect on yesterday's painting.

I'm proud of this painting. I've had this sake set sitting out ever since I unpacked two months ago, and I haven't been able to get up the nerve to paint it. I worried that I wouldn't be able to do justice to the beautiful glaze that tempted me to buy it at an arts festival several years ago, but I'm happy with the results.
