Propagation

 "Propagation"
10 x 10 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

Before I became a full-time artist, I was a plant lady - watering plants in office buildings, mainly. That was a decade ago, but my personal plant collection, though it's constantly evolving (along with everything else in life), remains a thing. A pretty big thing. Sometimes people even give me plants! That's how I came by this one, which broke as I was moving it back and forth from my studio, and spawned this cutting... And this painting!

Propagation.

Here's my underpainting, alongside the finished piece:

The Tale of Kanji

 "The Kanji Vase (Reworked)"
10 x 8 inches, oil on canvas

I painted this crazy drapeyness seventeen months ago. At the time, I was satisfied - I really liked that slippery turquoise cloth - but something was off. Fast forward a year or so, and "The Kanji Vase" escaped the Great Art Destruction Party of 2013 by the skin of its teeth. I suspected I could save it, but I'm not generally in the habit of working back into old paintings. Better to start fresh! Going randomly out-of-character, I attacked it one day, and voila: redemption.

Dark and Snowy

"Snowballs on Black"
approx. 5.5 x 4 inches, oil on Arches oil paper
Sold

I love these Snowball bushes. Too bad the deer that (over)populate my neighborhood love them, too. My husband put a little fence up around the baby I planted last year, but it's been too munched on already to provide any blooms this year. Luckily, my neighbors have a lovely, lush specimen that leans oh-so-conveniently over their deer fence right into my back yard. Another piece of luck - they last forever in a vase! Who knew?

Here's an example of how this painting-on-paper might look matted and framed:

Love these snowballs as much as I do? My first painting of them - another one-dollar auction - ends this evening! Check it out here.

The Red and the Green

8 x 10"
oil on canvas
$350

Why 'The Red and the Green,' you ask? (Because let's face it, this looks more like 'The Orange and the Pink'). It was done using the same red-green-yellow ocher palette that I used for my last figure painting.  It also happens to be the title of a book by my favorite author, so it kind of sprang to mind.

Below is the sketch for this piece - 30 minutes.
This weekend is looking pretty great: an art opening tonight (not for my work, but a show I'm excited to see), a very special portrait model in the morning, book club with the girls Saturday night, and maybe some more palette experimentation squeezed in too! I dug this old thing out of my bookcase the other day:

I think I got it when I was about eight. It's vintage.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Do you have a favorite author? Favorite book?

Is there a particular limited palette color combo I should try next?
