Calla Lillies and Roses

8 x 10"
oil on canvas
Sold
Longtime followers of my blog will recall me mentioning my friend Gabriella, whose studio I've so much enjoyed painting at. She's got a bunch of new work listed in her Etsy shop, so head over and check it out...you might just recognize some of the objects and setups in her paintings from what you've seen in my work!

Yellow Rose

5 x 7"
oil on canvas on panel
Sold
All the roses that I've painted this week came from the same bush. Somehow it produces red, yellow, and combination red and yellow flowers. Also, mysteriously, it is covered in healthy blooms even though it feels like December outside. Brr!

Red Rose, Yellow Rose - a miniature painting

3 x 3"
oil on canvas
$50

This gold bowl is so much fun to paint - have I mentioned that before? It reminds me of the Christmas ornament paintings that I did a while back (Hey, that one has a rose in it, too...). Basically, the bowl looks gold, but the paint is green. I love that.

Tulips with Green Apples

5 x 7"
oil on canvas on panel
$75
(on hold - contact me for info)
I'm feeling very comfortable in the 5 x 7" format lately, whereas last month, 9 x 12" felt just right. I don't think this has any deeper significance, it's just one of those intriguing things about being an artist. Speaking of pondering the concept of being an artist, I read a short story last night by A.S. Byatt on the subject that really blew me away. It's called "Art Work," part of her collection entitled The Matisse Stories. One of the characters is a still life painter, and her descriptions of his paintings, and of his mentality while creating them are amazingly insightful, and right. I really can't recommend this author highly enough.

Apples on a Blue Chair

5 x 7"
oil on linen on panel
$75
(on hold - contact me for purchase info)
Had a nice week-off from painting while my sister was visiting from Chicago. Happy mother's day weekend to all the moms - and kids - out there. We'll see if I get some lovely new flowers to paint for my first mother's day as a mom (hint hint!).

Tulips with Blue and Gold

8 x 10"
oil on canvas
Sold

This one was fun. I really think that everyone should try painting gold and silver. There is such a range of colors you can use to convey the metallic quality - and the reflections of the surrounding colors are also great to play with.

Tulips on Velvet

Hope springs eternal, just like these tulips. They come up like clockwork, every May. This is the third year we've been picking them from my mom's garden.

If you're prone to perusing the right hand sidebar of this blog, you may have already noticed my new Facebook badge. Yep, in addition to my personal Facebook page, I now have one solely dedicatied to myself, the artist. I'm still thinking about how I might distinguish the Facebook experience of Sedwick Studio from the blog (and twitter, and Etsy, and -don't forget - my new www site), but I might post things like works-in-progress there, I don't know. Anyway - join me on Facebook! As always, I will strive not to spam you.

Daily Painting #300

"Simple Spring Flowers"
8 x 10"
oil on canvas
Sold

I posted my first daily painting on February 21st, 2008, and I know I've come a long way in the past two years. I've painted and done various other kinds of art for most of my life, but during several years prior to starting this blog, I made no art whatsoever. I was kind of adrift - thoroughly discouraged after graduating art school, and wondering if I'd ever find a way to get back to a place where I wanted to create. The idea of Daily Painting freed me from the pressure I felt to make something "Great" every time I sat down at the easel. Knowing that tomorrow would be a new day - that I could just start over, no matter what happened with the particular piece I was working on has been a revelation.

Just for fun, here's #100 and #200.

Springtime Bouquet no. 2

8 x 8"
oil on panel
Sold
I think I got a little carried away while setting up this still life, but I had fun painting it, and the result is nothing if not, um, exuberant. No more daisies for a while, I promise - but a good chance of sunflowers in the forecast.

A new piece of fabric for me to love. I had a very productive outing to the thrift stores the other day, and now I have several new props to inspire me. Looking forward to the painting week ahead!

I have officially started using black paint. I'm not sure where I picked up the idea that black paint was the devil - probably art school - but lately I've read several people's accounts of using it in place of blue in a limited palette, and that made me see it differently. I'm not throwing out my French Ultramarine just yet, but I have started using small amounts of black strategically. Can you spot the black in this painting?

Sunflowers and Daisies

8 x 10"
oil on canvas

I'm really having a love affair with this piece of fabric. I mean, pretty flowers are nice, but you can tell that's not where my heart is in this painting. And, for some perspective, this fabric has only appeared in 5 of my last ten still lives. Maybe I should just marry it. :)

Sunflowers on Blue

8 x 10"
oil on canvas
Sold
Sunflowers aren't really springlike, but when I saw them at the store yesterday, I just couldn't resist. These remind me of paintbrushes, with their thick, rigid stems and their small, short-petaled flowers. When I was painting this last night, I was hating the blue background - it looked SO bright and vivid under the full spectrum light bulb, but in daylight it looked just fine. When I paint after dark, I usually feel like I have to wait until the next morning to see if what I did was any good! I try to mix my colors during the day, so I can at least trust my palette.
