Before beginning this painting yesterday, I warmed up with an exercise from The Daily Paintworks website - a series of ten-minute paintings of the same object. Well, that's the end of the pink roses, but this is only the first painting featuring my new studio table, which I picked up at a junk shop over the weekend. This place is not a thrift store, and it's not really an estate sale...I certainly wouldn't call it an antique shop. It's a storefront, and it's crammed full of stuff, and there's a guy there collecting money, but no price tags or cash registers....It's a junk shop, right?! Anyway, now that I've cleaned this table up a bit, you can look forward to seeing it in many paintings to come.

I posted some of my recent figure paintings in my Etsy shop. I'm way out of practice, but I've been happy with my results. It seems to be true that painting a nude isn't all that much different from painting a pile of apples. No offense intended to the beautiful models!

Well, here's how I spent my weekend! I guess that's not entirely true - I also made beef barley soup, ran five miles, watched a movie with Jesse, went to an estate sale, did some online shopping, and changed a bunch of diapers, but you know what I mean.

I went to a figure painting open studio the other night. I hate to admit it, but it's been ten years since I've done anything like that. It was really fun, and I promise I won't be waiting another ten years before I go back! I'd like to sell my creation to fund further sessions - at $11 for 3 hours, they're more than worth it, but not exactly small change - but I'm wondering if there's even a market for such academic kinds of things. We live in the woods. Not in a remote cabin, or anything, but in a neighborhood that was clearly carved out of a pine forest 30 or so years ago, with many of the trees left standing. When I saw this beautiful blue color behind the inky evening trees, I grabbed a canvas and got it down as quickly as I could, then filled the rest in slowly.
