"Camellia and Apple Blossoms" daily painting still life floral flowers spring garden original oil

9 x 12"
oil on canvas

This painting has a wintry feel to me, even though it's a very springy subject. Something about the  light background, the almost bare branch, and the starkly cast shadow all say "winter," although on the other hand, the warm light and bright pink blooms are all about spring.

"Red Camellia and Shadow" floral painting still life wall art home decor original oil painting on canvas

Camellias have the greatest leaves, don't they? I always feel like my green-mixing muscles get a good workout when I paint them.

"Camellia and Green Apple" still life oil painting red flowers floral fruit

6 x 8"
oil on canvas

Every spring I drive around with an eye peeled for blooming Camellias. I actually keep a pair of scissors in my glove compartment, just in case I spy one an opportunity to snip a few blossoms. Yes, it's true, spring brings out my inner thief!

"Bowl of Granny Smith Apples" still life oil painting food fruit kitchen

6 x 8"
oil on canvas

I'm back! Several things have kept me away from the easel recently. Spring break meant no preschool for my daughter, so we had playdates all week long with friends and neighbors.  Also we had a freak March snowstorm last week - an amazing amount of snow for any time of year around here - and our power went out....and stayed out for three days. I thought about doing some painting with the lovely natural snow-light, but, well, it was pretty darn cold in here!

I must be jealous of the sunny warm weather most of the country is enjoying lately. We could certainly use some brightness in this part of the world, so today I painted some!

It just occurred to me that this bright green is a wee bit late for St. Patrick's day. I suppose that's where my subliminal inspiration came from to use it in the first place, huh?

"A Glass of Chardonnay" white wine art painting still life flowers oil on canvas

8 x 8"
oil on canvas
Sold

I never much cared for white wine before I had a baby - in fact, it gave me heartburn. Well, pregnancy taught me what heartburn was really all about, and people do say that your tastes can change after a baby. Now I like white just as much as red, and that's saying something!

"Nude on Blue" female figure painting portrait asian woman

9 x 12"
oil on canvas
Sold

I really struggled with this model last week, so for the second session I tried to just relax and have fun with the painting. And I did - especially in the arms, where I put those brushstrokes down and left them alone - no blending, etc.

Below is a work-in-progress shot of this one. You can see that I try to sketch in my lightest areas first, to keep them clean, but I do need to establish my darkest darks early on, too, to keep everything in perspective.

I'm pretty sure I've gushed about this in the past, but, really, painting these brass vases is one of the things that makes art amazing. It's ridiculous how much I enjoy it, every time!

The trick to painting daffodils is to put that yellow on the canvas first - before any other paint. Even before your underdrawing - or else do your underdrawing in bright yellow!

"Iris and Red Apple" still life fruit and flowers floral oil painting

6 x 6"
oil on canvas

Here is my demo painting from class today. The lesson was about the horizon line, and how you can alter a viewer's whole experience of your painting by shifting it. In this piece I used a very low horizon line to create a feeling of looking up. We don't often see flowers from underneath, do we?

"High Tea" still life oil daily painting teapot floral flowers white rose

8 x 8"
oil on canvas
Sold

I recently got an email from a local art collector who made me an offer I absolutely couldn't refuse: borrow a bunch of items from their amazing ceramics collection, and use them in some of my daily paintings, with an eye towards completing a larger commission in the future.  I did something similar once before, with produce from a patron's garden, and it was a great experience. So happy to have the chance again!

These bulbs were a Christmas present, and they have just burst into full bloom. Their scent is a little overwhelming, but the flowers are gorgeous to look at. I'm thinking of planting them outside for next year.

I've heard it said that a partially-clothed model makes for an even more erotic image than one who's completely naked. Here's another example, if this painting doesn't convince you!

 8 x 10"

It's my honor to set the challenge this week for the artists of DPW, and here's my choice: raw meat! It's really no wonder - being on the Paleo Diet now, our fridge is jammed with it! Now that I've begun, I think I'll be doing a few more meat paintings - you know, just to get it out of my system.

I liked painting this spaghetti squash so much the other day that I  launched right into a second, bigger version. Luckily I had rubbed the cut apple with lemon - it wasn't even brown by the next morning!

"Nude with Silver Rings" female figure painting portrait art oil on canvas

16 x 20"

This is how I spent Valentine's evening, and it was time well spent, although some in my figure painting group (who shall remain nameless) chose to spend it with their sweeties. If my husband had any thoughts of objecting, well, they were forgotten when he saw what I brought home!
