Orange Slices and Silver

"Orange Slices and Silver"
8 x 13 inches, oil on canvas on panel
$350

I'm loving this little cream pitcher lately. The reflections in metal are so satisfying to paint. I think I'm going to have to go on a mission to find more silver inspiration!

$450

I've been getting some painting in before I head to my next workshop, in Sacramento, CA. There are still a few spots open, at the fabulous Patris Studio and Gallery, if you know anyone in the area who'd love some Oil Painting Boot Camp!

Boot Camp is a three-day workshop with an emphasis on loosening up your brushwork - and using a limited palette of three colors and white. Looking forward to it! More info here.

Silver Kiss

art painting oil painting still life sarah sedwick
"Silver Kiss"
8 x 10 inches, oil on linen panel
$250

The metal teapot is new to me, thanks to a very productive antique-mall outing. This kiss won't be the last you'll see of him, I'm sure! As the saying goes, "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Tomato Time Machine

oil painting still life tomato art by sarah sedwick
"Spilled Spoons"
9 x 12 inches, oil on canvas
Sold

We all have one: that thing we just CAN'T seem to paint. And mine is tomatoes. Or, at least, that's what I've been saying to myself, and plenty of other people, for years!  But! After watching my students create amazing tomato paintings in a workshop I taught last weekend, I thought - maybe I'll give it another try....

So this is my first big red tomato since... 2008! I love getting in the painting time machine. Definitely an argument in favor of keeping an archive of ALL your old work!

"Heirloom Tomato No. 3"
5 x 7 inches, oil on ...hmm, I can't remember. Maybe Raymar canvas panel?

Wheel of Fortune

 "Around the Wheel"
12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas
$400

The Tarot card in this painting is "The Wheel of Fortune." I've been choosing the cards for this series of paintings randomly - or rather, not randomly, but not due to any knowledge or prior research on their meanings. I've been choosing them like I choose most of my still life objects - for their colors and shapes, the visual elements they add to a composition.

Looking up "The Wheel of Fortune" once the painting was finished, I read: "The Wheel of Fortune speaks of a pivotal point in your life, where new options become possible. The appearance of the Wheel of Fortune shows that change is not only likely to happen, it is certain to happen, and soon."

....A solid sentiment for the new year, eh? And I thought this painting was just about circles and triangles!

Black and White study for this piece, oil on Arches oil paper, approx. 8x8". NFS.

The Pattern Beneath All Things

 "The Pattern Beneath All Things"
10 x 20 inches, oil on canvas
$500
I am amazed that I have no work-in-progress pictures of this one. It just kind of snuck out while I wasn't looking.

So, here's a picture of a cow:

I passed this girl and her buddies every day on my post-studio decompression run. Running by the side of the highway sounds pretty dismal, but as you can see, it was anything but. And pretty peaceful - not much traffic - just me and the cows and the huge changing sky.
