I paired this Tarot card with my baby Hoya because the wand has leaves growing from it.  The card symbolizes inspiration, and enthusiasm for new creative ventures. Sounds good to me!

Before I became a full-time artist, I was a plant lady - watering plants in office buildings, mainly. That was a decade ago, but my personal plant collection, though it's constantly evolving (along with everything else in life), remains a thing. A pretty big thing. Sometimes people even give me plants! That's how I came by this one, which broke as I was moving it back and forth from my studio, and spawned this cutting... And this painting!

This painting began as a demo for my online students - unbelievably, my art mentorship program is almost one year old! Time flies. And time certainly flew while I was doing this demo - in over two hours, I only got as far as the image on the left. As usual, the group and I covered a wide range of topics - and I DID edit the recording down to about 90 minutes, so you just get the good stuff!

Loyal readers of this blog may be detecting a theme around here lately. I'm working on a series of paintings of plants for an upcoming show I've decided to call "Floats and Flora." If you think that's a stupid name, don't tell me! It was hard to come up with - but I give myself credit. Last time I had to name a show I went with the yawn-inducing "New and Selected Works." I call that progress.

I'm Kind of a Plant Lady

As I've shared with you before, I'm kind of a plant lady. I did actually once work as a professional plant waterer in office buildings, but my houseplant obsession was already well established by then. It's the kind of thing where, even though you know you have no where to put them, you can't resist buying more. Then they get bigger, and you have to prune them....but you can't throw those pieces away!?! Hence, lots of baby plants. Like the one in this painting. It's a Peperomia Jayde, and I bought the parent plant back in the Cleveland days, so over eight years ago now.

I wanted to call this one "Cut Flowers Hate Houseplants (root envy)," but I restrained myself. What famous artist said it takes two to make a painting - one to paint it and another to kill her before she names it something stupid? I think I've got that quote wrong, anyway...

This little plant, for those who may be curious, is a Peperomia Jayde. It's taking a vacation from its normal abode on my kitchen windowsill to spend some time in the studio. Jayde isn't the only one on vacation - I'm off for a week of visiting family and friends in the Motherland Midwest. See you when I get back!

Yep, that's a paintbrush sticking out of the plant. I've been known to use worn out paintbrushes as stakes for droopy plant stems. Supposedly, if you have to stake a houseplant, it should really just be trimmed back, but I can't always bring myself to chop them.
